I answered like many people would, "In my sleep. That way I would wake up and see Jesus." Then I read the account of Polycarp's Martyrdom. Needless to say, I changed my mind.

Hearing his captors had arrived one evening, Polycarp left his bed to welcome them, ordered a meal prepared for them, and then asked for an hour alone to pray. The soldiers were so impressed by Polycarp’s advanced age and composure that they began to wonder why they had been sent to take him, but as soon as he had finished his prayers, they put him on a donkey and brought him to the city. Brought before the tribunal and the crowd, Polycarp refused to deny Christ, although the proconsul begged him to ‘consider yourself and have pity on your great age. Reproach Christ and I will release you.’

Polycarp replied, ‘Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has never once wronged me. How can I blaspheme my King, who saved me?’ Threatened with wild beasts and fire, Polycarp stood his ground. ‘What are you waiting for? Do whatever you please.’ The crowd demanded Polycarp’s death, gathering wood for the fire and preparing to tie him to the stake. ‘Leave me,’ he said. ‘He who will give me strength to sustain the fire will help me not to flinch from the pile.’ So they bound him but didn’t nail him to the stake.

As soon as Polycarp finished his prayer, the fire was lit, but it leaped up around him, leaving him unburned, until the people convinced a soldier to plunge a sword into him. When he did, so much blood gushed out that the fire was extinguished. The soldiers then placed his body into a fire and burned it to ashes, which some Christians later gathered up and buried properly.(From Foxe's Book of Martyrs

(From: Tullian Tchividjian. late distresses and awful apprehensions might prove but Christ's school to make me fit for greater service, by teaching me the great lesson of humility." The Life and Diary of David Brainerd, April 10, 1742

Without getting into too much detail, this quote struck a chord with me in my present circumstances. It also seems that during these times the creative juices are flowing. The following is a song I wrote regarding the struggles of believing that God will provide.

Provider

I feel weak
from trying to figure out these things
on my own
I am lost on this long road

It seems that weak
is right where You want me to be
for there I see
the Sovereign God above all things

There I know
that the birds who never sow are satisfied
There I know
that my God on high is the One who will provide

So take my faithless heart
and teach me of Your ways
Your people never move or breathe
apart from Sovereign Grace
Take away my pride
You alone are the God who will provide

How foolish of me
to see the God who parts the seas
and not believe
that He is above these petty things

Who am I
to tell the Potter how to design
I praise You God
that Your grace is not fair at all

Art and God...

One June 30th Crossway will release Francis Schaeffer: An Authentic Life. This (which I'm very excited about) and a recent post by Matt Johnson on the Doxologist Blog, has sparked my thinking in regards to art (specifically music) and God.

I went through a brief legalistic phase in high school, throwing away my secular CDs and refusing to watch R rated movies... then I read my Bible. I realized an important truth that Schaeffer points out so eloquently... when creativity is expressed, it is God's creativity. When an unbeliever paints a beautiful landscape he/she is expressing the goodness of God's creation. Of course, these creative expressions are damaged by sin... but that does not mean that God cannot be seen or heard in them.

I think many Christians miss out on the beauty of God's creation because so much of it is not under the label: "CHRISTIAN"

Colossians 1:16-17 "For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."

Don't misread. I am fully aware of the fact that much of the music and art in the world is blatantly dishonoring to God. Christians have to be discerning. But to limit your CD selection to only what they sell at Lifeway is to ignore the fact that the sovereign God of the universe is revealing himself in soooo many other ways!

With a discerning spirit, let us acknowledge the One True Creative Being in all things... music, paintings, poetry, novels, etc.

Random thoughts from T-Rex on legalism (fits the discussion)

How do we Really View Worship?

In church, I have always been the guy with the guitar. Worship Leading came about when Student Pastor forced me to lead at summer camp. Now that I am an 'official' Worship Leader (whatever that means!) I have been studying what it means to truly worship God. The following is from a little document for the Worship Ministry at our church. This is what the Bible says. Does it sound like this is how most churches and Christians view worship?

Worship Is…
Definition: “Worship is the extravagant, open enjoyment of God as the fountain of life. And therefore it is a public declaration that God is more to be desired than all the pleasures of this world.”

1.Life

In 1 Corinthians 10:31 the Apostles Paul gives the goal of the Christian life: So, “whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” We are not to merely glorify God when we sing songs to Him on Sunday mornings. We are not merely to glorify God when we pray or read His word. We are to glorify God in ALL things. When we are driving to work, when we are jogging in the morning, when we are eating dinner, when we are putting the kids to bed, when we are doing homework, when we are giving our tithes and offerings, when we are hearing the word expounded… we are to glorify God.
Isaiah 43:6-7 says, “I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, Whom I formed and made.” When the believer is living a lifestyle of worship to the living God he/she is fulfilling the purpose of life.

2.Corporate

While the New Testament rarely discuss corporate worship in the way we imagine it, the scriptures very clearly point out the importance of gathering regularly to fellowship and lift high the name of Jesus:

1 Corinthians 14:23 speaks of “the whole church gathering together.”

Acts 2:46 speaks of the early church “attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes.”

Hebrews 10:25 speaks of “not neglecting to meet together.”

While corporate worship is important, the believer must never forget that the deciding factor of true worship is one’s inward condition.

Ephesians 5:18-20: And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

John 4:23-24 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

3.Fuel For Evangelism and Missions

One of the greatest pictures of worship in the Bible is found in Revelation:

Revelation 7:9-12 “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Since God’s goal is His glory, He longs for the people of all nations to praise His name. With this in mind, worship should not simply be a personal thing. It should stand as the goal of our evangelism and missionary efforts. We should stand before God as Isaiah did in Isaiah 6. After peeking into a heavenly worship session, he responds as every believer should:

Isaiah 6:8 “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’”

Fortunately, we don’t have to sit around and wonder what God wants is to do. Jesus made it very clear:

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

In his book Let the Nations be Glad, John Piper points out:

“Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man… Worship, therefore, is the fuel and goal of missions. It’s the goal of missions because in missions we simply aim to bring the nations into the white-hot enjoyment of God’s glory. The goal of missions is the gladness of the peoples in the greatness of God… But worship is also the fuel of missions. Passion for God in worship precedes the offer of God in preaching… Missions begins and ends in worship.”

Also, see Bob Kauflin's blog for some great resources and thoughts on worship.

Anonymous or Accountable?

Tim Challies has recently posted two entries on his blog about the importance of accountability in an increasingly anonymous society.

1. Drawing Out the Infection
2. Behind Closed Doors

An Excerpt from Drawing out the Infection:

"I thought of this principle while sitting with the men of my church last Wednesday night. No, none of the men there had a huge blight on his face or anything unsightly like that. We’ve been reading through Josh Harris’ Sex Is Not the Problem (Lust Is) and came to the chapter dealing with accountability and the kind of friendship that asks the tough questions. We talked together for quite some time about the kind of relationship that allows for deep and probing questions—the kind of relationship that offers a real level of accountability. We soon came to see that almost all of us desire to be in this kind of relationship—one where we can speak with other Christian men and have them both challenge us to put sin aside and preach the gospel to us in those times where we’ve committed that sin yet again. This is not just accountability that focuses on sexual sins, but on all kinds of sin and transgression. But though it seems that all of us felt we could benefit from this kind of relationship, I believe that very few of us actually are."

Writing Tips from C.S. Lewis

I've always wanted to be a writer. I know many people who are brilliant writers. It just comes naturally for them. For me, on the other hand, it is a slow learning process. So I feel blessed by advice like this from C.S. Lewis:

1. Always try to use the language so as to make quite clear what you mean and make
sure your sentence couldn't mean anything else.
2. Always prefer the clean direct word to the long, vague one. Don't implement
promises, but keep them.
3. Never use abstract nouns when concrete ones will do. If you mean "More people
died" don't say "Mortality rose."
4. In writing, don't use adjectives which merely tell us how you want us to feel
about the things you are describing. I mean, instead of telling us the thing is
"terrible," describe it so that we'll be terrified. Don't say it was
"delightful"; make us say "delightful" when we've read the description. You see,
all those words (horrifying, wonderful, hideous, exquisite) are only like saying
to your readers "Please, will you do my job for me."
5. Don't use words too big for the subject. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean
"very"; otherwise you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something
really infinite.

Post from DG Blog

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kevinsanders.blogspot.com/2008/04/writing-tips-from-cs-lewis.html' title='Writing Tips from C.S. C’mon, behave
But worst of all, you’re saying the cross by itself doesn’t save
That we must do something to give the cross its power
That means, at the end of the day, the glory’s ours
That man-centered thinking is not recommended
The cross will save all for whom it was intended
Because for the elect, God’s wrath was satisfied
But still, when it comes to those in hell
Well, they be saying:

Lord knows He tried

More on Shai Linne and Lampmode Recordings

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kevinsanders.blogspot.com/2008/04/learning-limited-atonement-from-hip-hop.html' title='Learning Limited Atonement... This month its the Life of David Brainerd by Jonathan Edwards.

Things like this remind me of the joy of Christian audio. There are many reasons for this. The first is that it makes me realize that 104.7 the Fish is not the only Christian audio out there (for that I am ever grateful).

The second more spiritual reason is that I have grown closer to God in heart and in mind since I began listening to 4-6 sermons a week.

The third reason is that the advance of technology has made it possible the spread the good news of Christ in a quicker, clearer, and broader way. How amazing it is to see how God spreads His truth!

So
Listen to more sermons
Kevin

A Break in the Writer's Block

Lately I've had writers block (not on the blog... I thought I would list some.

1. Christian Classics Ethereal Library- Offered by Calvin College. Featuring a bazillion commentaries, books, and sermons from all of the old dead guys... That's how you know it's good.

2. Reformed Theological Seminary Courses on Itunes- Yes, there are entire courses for free. All of the courses fall under Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, New Testament, Old Testament, or Church History. They also have chapel sermons as well as other informational downloads.

3. Bible Gateway- An online Bible resource. It's great for comparing translations, looking up key words, and it also has a topical index.

4. Good Theology- This one isn't free but you can't beat the prices. The description is in the title.

5. Westminster Seminary Bookstore- Again, not free but probably the best online bookstore.

6. Monergism- A bazillion reformed essays, articles, etc.

7. Sovereign Grace- Great resources for church planting, worship, great sermons, etc. Get their free sermons
here.

8. Desiring God-Free sermons, articles, etc.

9. Movie Reviews- this is great for parents, youth pastors, and Christians in general. Christian movie reviews that tell you all you need to know about the movies you want to see.

These have all helped in in personal quiet time, study, and just life in general. I hope they bring you closer to God as they have done for me.

By the Grace of Christ

Save Me From Myself

Last Thursday night my wife and I took a trip to Barnes and Noble. Like many of my friends it is nearly impossible for me to spend more than 10 minutes in the place without buying a book. Also, it doesn't help that I have a membership card which promises at least 10% of each purchase (I highly recommend one to any reader). So I purchased a book that has stirred up some hype in secular and Christian media.

Save Me From Myself is a spiritual memoir by Brian "Head" Welch, the former guitarist of the "Metal" band Korn. The reason I recommend this book is not because of some deep theological discussion or anything like that (In fact, I disagree with some theological views). I recommend the book because it is a great testimony of the power of God in the life of a sinner. It was a reminder to me of the depths of my sin and wickedness and the overwhelming grace of God. He used it to remind me of His Sovereignty over all, even evil.

A less spiritual reason for reading the book is that I used to love me some Korn.

Getting Uncomfortable...

Joshua Harris is the guy popularly known for his book I Kissed Dating Goodbye. About 3 years ago he came out with a book entitled Stop Dating the Church. Judging from a recent Interview
by Outreach Magazine Harris offers some great biblical insight on the struggle with outreach that the Church faces today.

As someone in ministry, I can relate to Harris when he speaks about his own struggles with personal evangelism and the importance of stepping out of the typically squeaky clean comfort zone of the Christian life:

"...but I’d rather preach in front of 10,000 people than sit down across from one person and try to share the Gospel with her! I tend to do the wimpy style of evangelism that doesn’t require any challenging confrontations. That’s why I’m seeking to exert myself in forming friendships and finding natural ways to get involved in the lives of those who don’t know the Lord. It’s kind of silly, but I’ve done this by preparing my messages at the café in a local Whole Foods store. I’ve gotten to know all kinds of people who work there and formed some great friendships."

It Has Arrived....

The new ESV Journaling Bible was released by Crossway on August 15th.

A Page is Turned...

This is my first time blogging as a married man. I'm sitting in an incredibly nice condo in peaceful Seaside, FL with my beautiful new wife. As I begin this new chapter of my life I am being constantly reminded of the grace of God... how undeserving I am of it, how desperately I need it, and how generously He gives it.
Here is a Puritans point of view from The Valley of Vision:

Blessings

Thou Great Three-One,

Author of all blessings I enjoy,
of all I hope for,
thou hast taught me
that neither of the experience of present evils,
nor the remembrances of former sins,
nor the remonstrances if friends
will or can affect a sinner's heart,
except thou vouchsafe to reveal thy grace
and quicken the dead in sin
by the effectual working of thy Spirit's power.
Thou hast shown me
that the sensible effusions of divine love
in the soul are superior to and distinct from
bodily health,
and that oft-times spiritual comforts are
at their highest when physical well-being is
at its lowest.
Thou hast given me the ordinance of song as a means of grace;
Fit me to bear my part in that music ever new,
which elect angels and saints made perfect
now sing before thy throne and before the Lamb.
I bless thee for tempering every distress with joy;
too much of the former might weigh me down,
too much of the latter might puff me up;
Thou art wise to give me a taste of both.
I love thee
for giving me clusters of grapes
in the wilderness,
and drops of heavenly wine
that set me longing to have my fill.
Apart from thee I quickly die,
bereft of thee I starve,
far from thee I thirst and droop;
But thou art all I need.
Let me continually grasp the promise,
'I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.'

Above All...

“He took the fall and thought of me above all.”

However well intentioned the author of this lyrics is, it is still a frightening reflection of the man-centeredness of many churches in America today. So many of us have grown up in churches that have taught us that the cross of Jesus Christ was all for us. He died for us alone. He came to lift us up out of darkness and raise us up high and serve us whatever we need and want. The problem with all of these statements is not that they are completely false. It is that they are incomplete. Yes, Jesus came to die for us that we might have life (Jn. 3:16, Rom. 3:25, 1 John 4:10, Gal. 3:13). But we miss the point if we think Jesus died so that we can be served by Him in this life and the next.

“Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.” 1 Peter 3:18

“Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth, …whom I created for my glory.” Isaiah 43:6-7

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

It is becoming more and more apparent to me lately that the American Church needs a revival. We have lost the grip on the true meaning of our purpose as individual believers and as the Church of Jesus. Everywhere I look I see conferences, seminars, sermon series, and books that communicate in “cool” and “emerging” ways, they reel people in and think that they are successful. Of course they’re successful! If someone stands in front of a crowd week after week and tells them that Jesus, life, the universe is all about them and what they want, they will certainly be "successful."

Some one once said that a prophet was hated in his home town (Jesus: Mk. 6:4, Lk. 4:24).

So what is the answer? The same answer that it has always been. The cross. Preach the cross. Preach the cross. Preach the cross. Stop the gimmicks, stop the pragmatism, stop the worldliness. Preach the cross. When we truly dive into God’s word we see only the cross. Our lives will be consumed by the preeminence of Jesus. We will want nothing more than to reject ourselves and experience the joy that is found in giving Him glory above all.

Faith/ Works/ In/ Not Of

I have been reading How Then Should We Live? By Francis Schaeffer. The book is wonderful. It’s a classic that I have been wanting to read for a long time and it is everything that I hoped for and more. One of the issues that Schaeffer discusses pretty early on is the extent to which a Christian should be involved with this world. Summed up: “Where is the line between ‘in this world’ and ‘not of this world?’” It got me thinking.

It’s an important question that every Christian must ask. It is also one of the most debatable topics in Christianity. On one end of the spectrum, a Legalistic would ridiculously abstain from things such as sports games. These are those folks who tell me that I am going to hell for going to a Braves game. They would immediately claim that any use of alcohol as a sin, consider Christians in public schools as ridiculous, hate T.V.s etc. On the other end of the spectrum is those who live their lives based on the phrase, “freedom in Christ” taking God’s word out of context in a way that is almost unimaginable. You will find these people often telling others that Jesus hung out in bars. He made weed so its ok to smoke it. Where they got that from? I don’t know. Then there are those who struggle. I would say that’s where most fall.

When I think of the struggle with legalism I think of the churches of Galatia. Paul wrote this epistle to people who failed to embrace the true freedom that is found in Christ and instead trusted in rules and regulations. They depended on the law and not on faith. Galatians 3:1-6 reads as follows,

“O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness?”

Paul longed for the people to understand that it is the work of the cross that saves and justifies a sinner. It is not any sort of works of righteousness. When a person has a works based mentality of the Christian life, he/she is failing to recognize the indelible work of the Cross. Instead, one should hold unwaveringly to the biblical doctrine of justification by grace through faith in Christ alone.

Like many other Christians, I went through a legalistic phase early on in my life as a believer. If I could choose one word to describe the phase it would be immaturity. I felt that what I did earned me brownie points in the eyes of God. I could keep careful tabs on my brownie points and therefore know my standing with God at any given time. If I read my Bible that morning… point for me. If I called a friend a dirty word later that afternoon, my point from the morning was cancelled out. I felt like I had to do something to get back in right standing with God. It got pretty bad.

I have talked to many Christians who have gone through the same sort of thing. Why do you think that is? The Sunday school answer would be that we are sinners, which is true. But deeper than that, I think we easily act that way because that’s how we often interact with people. When a guy ticks of his girlfriend he buys her flowers and does something nice so that she wont be mad at him anymore. The difference there is that Jesus Christ isn’t some chick that refuses forgiveness until you do something nice.

There was one major thing missing in my legalistic equation of things… THE CROSS!!!! “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf that we might become the righteousness of God.” That dirty word that I said that afternoon, nailed to the cross. That thing I said to tick of my girlfriend, nailed to the cross. My sin, nailed to the cross.

When we live by the Law we are under a curse. That is the purpose of the Law, to show us our wickedness. Galatians 3:10 says, “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed be everyone who does nit abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.’”

In Galatians 3:6 Paul uses the example of Abraham believing in God and it being counted to him as righteousness. This is one of the greatest examples in scripture of justification by faith but many beg to differ. In his letter to the persecuted Christians scattered abroad James uses the example of Abraham to explain the importance of works.

20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. (James 2:20-24)

How do we reconcile the two passages? They seem to contradict each other. What must be understood is that Paul’s teaching on justification was being distorted by many. People took his words and twisted them, cheapening grace by living an anything-goes lifestyle (Romans 3:8). James speaks out against this Phony faith. We can see that by what he says in verse 14. “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?”

That faith which cannot save is not true faith. It is a head-knowledge and a fruitless “Christianity.” James wanted us to understand that true saving faith is shown by our works. Paul and James would both agree that saving faith is not merited but given by Christ. They also would have agreed that faith that bears no fruit is not real faith at all.

This has incredible implications on how we should live in this world. We should live as those saved and justified by grace through faith in Christ. As the redeemed our lives should be abundant with good works, kind and truthful words, loving and Christ-like attitudes. We should seek to build others up and not cause them to stumble. When it comes to specific things: cigars, alcohol, television, music, etc. Know that Christ calls us to live holy, sober-minded lives. Seek His truth and live for His glory above all else.

been gone so long...

I don't like the fact that I haven't been on here in so long and I still don't have much to say.

I will recommend a book for anyone who cares. Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches is a book that consists of five different authors (Mark Driscoll, John Burke, Dan Kimball, Doug Pagitt, and Karen Ward). Each author contributes a chapter while the others offer a brief response. As a young guy in ministry who feels called to preach and pastor in this day and age, I highly recommend it. It presents many different theological views as well as methodologies. I have read everyone's chapter except Karen Ward's. I've laughed, wondered, almost cussed (Doug Pagitt), and smiled at truth (Mark Driscoll).

Don't take my word for it. He told me of another student who felt convicted about watching to much T.V. using to much internet, etc. So he decided to pitch his six man tent in his backyard. He ran an extension chord, hooked up a lamp, brought his Bible and some other books and vowed not to leave until he reads his Bible… a lot. I was asked if I wanted to come and participate for a night. The answer I gave: Definite yes.

Upon hearing this, some would think of this crazy legalistic kid who is trying to achieve an incredible amount of righteousness to brag about. Some may even think that he is a little crazy. I see a kid who loves God and refuses to let something stupid like T.V. or internet get in his way of glorifying the God of the universe.

The whole thing got me thinking. What happened to being a little “crazy-eyed for Christ” (as a friend put it)? I see guys in the church today whose major concern is that they don’t spill their late on their $150 shirt. The idea of missing Lost or Desperate Housewives is frightening to them. So they Tvo whatever show it is that de-masculanizes them so they can watch it after their Bible study. Then I read of guys in the Bible who kill bears and lions, eat bugs, wear camel skin attire, and love them some Jesus.

That said, stop being weenies and start doing crazy things for Christ.

Here is Driscoll talking about a similar issue in church planting.

<div These rules I propose to teach to those who are able and willing to learn.” With these words Saint Augustine (354-430 AD) began one of the finest theological treatments ever written on reading and interpreting Holy Scripture. Pastors, monks, and educated laypersons cherished De Doctrina Christiana from the time Augustine wrote it through the Middle Ages. While Paul is speaking directly to the elders of the church in Ephesus, the same is true with many churches today.

The leader of this pack of wolves? The Seeker-friendly and Emergent movements. According to these movements anyone is allowed into the flock. The churches goal is to gather as many lost people as possible in one big, cool, expensive building. Sounds good, right? I want to hug someone right now. There's only one problem IT'S UN-BIBLICAL! It strays far from the biblical view of the church: A gathering of believers who glorify God become equipped for works of service. These seeker friendly churches water down the gospel, sugar coat its message, and re-package it as if it's not enough. These "Christians" feel that there is no need to minister outside of church. "Just bring 'em here! Get as many in the door so we can count 'em and make the cover of whatever Christian Magazine as the most successful church of 2007." Successful? Thousands of spiritually immature churchgoers who think that they are giving it up by committing to a one-hour "church service" once a week? Is that what Jesus considers a successful ministry?

The only difference between these services and a U2 concert is that the services are half as long and Bono might actually use the name of Jesus... maybe.

It makes me sick

Do You Really Like Spurgeon?

"Calvinism is the Gospel."

A Blog Record and the Book of Acts

My last post got 3 DIFFERENT comments!!! How crazy is that. I think I shed a tear when I read it.

I have been reading through the book of Acts in my daily devotions and something very very clear has been pointed out to me. The church isn't what I thought it was!
No where in scripture do I find followers of Christ seeking to get as many people as possible into church so they can pump em up a bit and give em some Jesus! (which is what so many churches today do). Instead, churches existed ultimately for the glory of God which consisted of the fellowship of believers, the sacraments, etc.

Do you want to know how they saw conversions? Do ya? Ok. Here we go!

THEY TOLD PEOPLE ABOUT JESUS!!!
They actually participated in real and genuine ministry which meant that they had to get their hands dirty. They had to risk rejection. They had to put their lives on the line. They had to swallow their pride!!!!

It's not easy to share your faith. It's way easier to invite people to church. So easy that we have neglected the truth of scripture in order to cater to our wants. Churches have become increasingly shallow... "a mile wide and one inch deep."

It's my prayer that I will personally grow in knowing God's purpose for the church, swallowing my pride and sharing my faith without shame. I hope and pray that the Body of Christ will want nothing more than the glory of their true love.

Stop Singing to God like He's Your Girlfriend!

I was listening to a popular band that I like and I was bothered by the ambiguous lyrics to a number of their songs. Then I started to think about this trend that's going on in a lot of seeker-friendly churches today. The thought process goes something like this: "This song was most likely written about a girl but we can sing it to God because it talks about love and stuff." I sort of understand that... but not really. There are two major reasons why.

1. If you really love Jesus your going to find a way to sing to Him without having to borrow lyrics from pop-songs. In all seriousness, Christian artists should have the best lyrics (not the cheesiest). After all we are children of God! (1 John 3:1)

2. (This fits better with the particular artist I was listening to.) If you call yourself a Christian artist your listeners shouldn't have to wonder whether or not your talking about God or a girl. If it's about a girl, fine. But if it's about God remember that He is your Lord and Savior, Creator of all the Universe, the Alpha and the Omega, The King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords, NOT a girlfriend.

Some may come back and say that the Bible gives the picture of God and the Church as husband and wife. This is plainly true and I am in no way disregarding the intimacy that is required in a relationship with Christ. But the biblical image is of God as the bridegroom, the pursuer and redeemer of his bride (Hosea 3), once again, NOT a girlfriend.

Cutis "Voice" Allen

Rapper Curtis "Voice" Allen recently preformed at Bethlehem Baptist Church. The importance of mortification has been echoed in the lives of two close friends who feel the same conviction regarding the subject.
It all started at the Desiring God Pastor’s Conference in February. R.C. Sproul listed several books that have had a great impact on his life. One of the titles interested me. The Mortification of Sin by John Owen was highly recommended by Dr. Sproul. The bookstore at the conference had the book in stock so I picked it up after the session. I also picked up a copy of the January edition of Table Talk (Dr. Sproul’s monthly publication). The topic for that month was, unbeknownst to be, The Mortification of Sin. It’s funny to see how God uses little things to pound ideas into my little head.
This morning I listened to a lecture by Dr. John Piper on John Owen from a conference in 1994. All this to stay that God has been moving me to the important command that Owen, Sproul, Piper, and many other Christ exalting theologians consider so important. This command is found clearly Colossians 3:5-6:

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.”

In an article entitled The Practice of Mortification Sinclair B. Ferguson points out that we need to
“learn to admit sin for what it really is. Call a spade a spade- call it ‘sexual immorality,’ not ‘I’m being tempted a little’; call it ‘impurity’ not ‘I’m struggling with my thought life’; call it ‘evil desire, which is idolatry,’ not ‘I think I need to order my priorities a bit better.’”

All too often we voice our sin as less violating than it actually is. How are we to mortify it if we are denial of its severity? Paul meant what he said in verse 6: On account of these the wrath of God is coming. We are new men in Christ (Col.3:9). We should seek to destroy the deceitful pleasures of our flesh! A constant killing of sin and the flesh provides an entry way for the true joy that is found in obedience to Christ! Why should we dance around the truth of our sin in order to save face and keep our pride intact? Why shouldn’t we run to the promises of Christ and put of our old self for the joys of the new? It is my hope and prayer that Christians everywhere will seek to master this concept as the move upward in the process of sanctification.

PS- Reading ANYTHING by John Owen is stinking hard!!

Seeking to Mortify,
Kevin

The Blood

Enjoying the artistic side of life, I have just decided to start a musical project. Such discussion is rare on this blog but I'm just that kind of guy... edgy (I don't know what that means).

Anyways, God has been really driving home the central truth of substitutionary atonement. The project will consist of a series of songs addressing different aspects of Christ's death on the cross. I'm not sure that it will be anything worth listening to but I can say that I look forward to spending time in deep thought, prayer, and worship during this project.

Also, I am looking forward to reading a brand new book on the subject entitled Pierced for Our Transgressions. Check it out.

Pierced for Our Transgression

More Info on the Subject...
Theopedia

Read a Book

Lately, God has been showing me the importance of growing in knowledge. I have met so many people in ministry who don't read because it's a "waste of time." They think they sound holy when the say, "the only book I read is the GOOD book." I agree that the Bible is the most important book and the inherent Word of God. But there are some amazing books out there that will point readers directly to God's word. Here are a few that changed my life...

1. Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
2. Desiring God by John Piper
3. Confessions of St. Augustine (Reading it right now)
4. A Legacy of Sovereign Joy by John Piper (About joy in the lives of Calvin, Luther, and Augustine)
5. The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul
6. Reason to Believe by R.C. Sproul
7. I am Not but I Know I Am by Louie Giglio
8. The Unquenchable Worshipper by Matt Redman
9. The Westminster Confession of Faith
10. The Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689
11. Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem
12. Spurgeon's Sermons

I don't read so I can look, act, or seem smart. I read because Christ has given me a very specific command to make disciples. If we are to be disciples and disciple makers we should long to excersise our minds for the glory of Christ.

For all 4 of you who are reading this, go read a book.

All For His Glory
Kevin

Antinomy?

Piper disagrees with Packer's Antinomy View:

A Response to J.I. After writing an 11 page paper on the subject I felt the need to blog.

A simple definition of Open Theism is the belief that God DOES NOT know the events of the future. Major proponents of this idea include Clark Pinnock, John Sanders and Boyd among others. In reading the opinions and views of these 'theologians' it seems that their beliefs are based out of misconceptions of man's relation to God. For example, in his book The God Who Risks John Sanders states:

"Thus God does not have a specific divine purpose for each and every occurrence of evil. The 'greater good' of establishing the conditions of fellowship between God and creatures does not mean that gratuitous evil has a point. Rather, the possibility of gratuitous evil has a point but its actuality does not. ... When a two-month-old child contracts a painful, incurable bone cancer that means suffering and death, it is pointless evil. The Holocaust is pointless evil. God does not have a specific purpose in mind of these occurrences."

There are many problems with this statement. I see two main inconsistencies with Sanders' statement in light of scripture.
The first is that of Sanders' un-biblical view that mankind does not deserve death or suffering. Paul quotes Psalm 14 in Romans 3 when he says, "None is righteous, no, not one..." Because of our unrighteousness we are deserving of death. The idea in Sanders' statement is that if God knew the future He would never let a two-month-old contract an incurable cancer. This assumes that a small child deserves life from God. Sanders fails to recognize that everything that mankind does, without being completely and utterly destroyed, is made possible by the grace of God. James 1:15 says, "Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings for death." Because of the fall all are sinners, and all are deserving of death. Another example of this is seen in Luke 13:1-5. A group of people ask Jesus to explain why a group of people were murdered by Pilate. They seemed to expect an apology or a logical explanation for the unfortunate event. Instead, Jesus turns the question around on them and tells them that they will likewise perish unless they repent. He also reminded them of another disaster where a tower fell and killed eighteen people. Jesus tells them that they were just as guilty and deserving. Why would Jesus say something like that? Isn't that harsh? NO!! It's true! Sinners deserves death and we are all sinners.

The second inconsistency with scripture is Sanders assumption that his two examples (the two-month-old and the Holocaust) can not be used for God's glory. The story of Joseph in Genesis is an example of a life of unfortunate events that would never appear to be used for God's glory. A faithful servant, Joseph, was beaten and sold by his brothers, sent to a foreign land as a slave, falsely accused of adultery, and separated from his loving father. At the end of Genesis Joseph speaks of his trials: "But Joseph said to them, 'do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant good" Genesis 50:19-20 (ESV). This is just one of many biblical examples in which God uses something that appears to be evil as a part of his foreordained plan to glorify Himself.

2 Timothy 4:3 is a reminder that many will not endure sound doctrine but will instead hold to what their itching ears want to hear. It's important for us to hold strong to sound doctrine and refute the heretical beliefs that seem to solve the "problems" of scripture.

Holding Fast to the Truth of God's Word
Kevin

1/22/07

Reflections on James 1:19-27

There are two passages that have hit me like a God-sized bomb lately. The first is Revelation Chapter 3 which deals with the “lukewarm” Christians who bask in their American-like consumerism and spiritual complacency. The other, more recent passage that has been on my heart and mind is James 1:19-27. Like Revelation chapter three it speaks of the frightening difference between being merely a hearer of God’s word and a doer of God’s word. I will be the first to say that I have been both. I have been the guy who goes to all of the “right” bible studies, listens to all of the “right” music, says all of the “right” things, and hangs out with all of the “right” people. That was my faith. Comfortable. Easy. Non-threatening. Forget getting my hands dirty. Forget helping the poor. Forget being unashamed about Jesus. I felt good. Then I realized something. The type of good that I was feeling was not the type of good I saw in God’s servants. It wasn’t the Apostle-Paul-Like good where pain, suffering, and near-death-experiences were a daily thing along with the joy of being a sold out follower of Jesus Christ. The good I felt was the mere hearer’s good. The lukewarm good that the church of Laodecia thought sufficient enough to save while Christ was spitting them out of His mouth. I’ve realized that Americas faith is one of comfort and distant support. We love sending monthly checks to Africa but forget helping the Heroin addict downtown. That’s a little to close to comfort.

I’m not talking about redemption as the fruit of works. I’m talking about works as the fruit of redemption. Action without life–change is meaningless. Life-change without action is incomplete.

So what do we do? The answer is in the question. God what can I do. Tell me. I don’t care how hard, how uncomfortable, how dirty it is. I just care about doing what You want me to do. I don’t want to be a mere hearer. I want to be a doer. I firmly believe that God is sovereign in election so I'm often accused of rejecting evangelism. In actuallity, predestination gives me hope. Why? Because I know that God has ordained many to be saved. I have hope that my efforts to spread the Gospel won't be useless because God WILL save.

In 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 Paul states, "But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first-fruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this He called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." (ESV)
Paul expressed his thankfulness to God for using him to fulfill His plan for the elect in Thessalonica. In the writings of Paul we see a great reverance for the sovereignty of God in election as well as a strong and zealous commitment to evangelism.

That should be our prayer... That the God of the universe will gracefully use us to spread the truth of the Gospel as He gathers His elect into His Kingdom.

Merry Christmas!

8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

Luke 2:8-14 ESV

I spent five hours in Barnes and Noble yesterday. The Church needs to be actively breathing truth into the culture of today and we have totally fallen short. I know, that's kind of weird... It's Christmas, right? But I have been reading through Mark and that's where I am. Today I read in Mark 14 when Jesus tells all of the disciples that they are about to bail out on Him in his final hour. They just had a nice passover feast, they sang a Him, and He tells them they're going to bail. I can imagine how they felt. "We've been Your loyal disciples for all this time and now you tell us we're gonna leave! What's up with that?" We all know what happens next. They bail out on Jesus, He conquers death and rises. They believe, I mean truly believe, and God does some amazing things through their lives.

I've been there before... recently. I give God some nice talk about how I'm there till the end, through light and dark. Of course, everything is light when I say that. When stuff gets dark I have a tendency to bail. So what happened between Mark and Acts that changed the lives of these guys? I think that they stopped being skeptics. Sure, they followed Christ all through His ministry but there were just somethings that they didn't understand. They declared Him as Lord but what did that really mean to them? The whole death and resurrection thing probably confused them a bit. Then it happened! Jesus did it and it clicked. They realized that Christ isn't just someone that offers a good way to live. They realized that He is faithful. He is Holy. He is sovereign. He is worthy. He is the resurrected Lord! Who wants to bail out on that?
That's not just something to live for. That's something to die for. Also, the Holy Spirit happened (Acts 2). The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead. The same Spirit that lives in us (Romans 8:11).

So, by grace, we can stand firm in the truth that the Holy Spirit will empower us to look to God in all of His holiness, fall flat on our face in reverence, and know that only He, in His sovereignty will guide us through for HIS glory alone.

Open the Gates...

7Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8Who is this King of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle!
9Lift up your heads, O gates!
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory!
Selah
Psalm 24:7-10

This Psalm was used in corporate worship. My favorite part was when Jose asked us to pray that he would be able to visit Mexico. He loves Mexico. I could tell because he had a baseball cap with the color scheme of the Mexican flag. It was one of those hats that is embroidered so thick that the words are almost 3D. We talked about Ephesians 2... How we are God's workmanship. One kid had a shirt on that said "God at Work". He had no idea what it meant but I did. How could I not. I was seeing God work right in front of my eyes. We prayed for sick family members, we prayed for a trip to Mexico, we prayed for school. We played football, played with a puppy, drank Sunny D. All of these things were routine for me until something just clicked.

"Kevin. So, children of God (AKA the four of you who read this), don't ever forget that our awesome God runs after unworthy human beings like us.

Kevin

I have this place where I go to have "alone-time". I don't want to tell anyone where it is because I feel like that would ruin it. I'm not superstitious or anything. I just like it that way. It's just me and Him if that makes any sense. Anyways, I have grown rather fond of this place over the past month and a half. God has spoken to me there. He has revealed things to me... Things that need to change, things that need to be valued more...

If I had to think of one word to describe my time there it would be... Intimacy. It seems as if intimacy is being neglected by the church as a whole. Maybe we have failed to emphasize the fact that the Christian life is a constant life. It's a life that keeps going after church on Sunday or Wednesday or whenever. It's a life that's devoted to doing all things for the glory of God. It's a life that's difficult and always will be. And if there is no intimacy with God it's non-existent. The Dean of my college encouraged us yesterday with a verse from Proverbs 4.

"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life."

I want to keep living a life that glorifies my great God. I want to know Him more and more every day and walk with Him always. It turns out that it takes some effort. I have to stop. I have to think. I have to look around and realize that this world can easily distract me from my purpose... His glory.

Find a place. Spend time with God. Why? Because your not above screwing up. Your not above conforming to the patterns of this world. The good thing is that He is.

I'll have to find a new place when winter arrives. That's ok.

"Daniel broke the King's decree.
Peter stepped from the ship to the sea.
There was hope for Job like a cut down tree.
I hope that there is such hope for me."
MeWithoutYou

Young and Unashamed

Let me tell you some truth. It's difficult to update this thing on a regular basis. I need to do a better job.

Now, more truth.

God has been teaching me a lot lately about evangelism. I'm not talking about standing on a box on a street corner with a bull horn. I'm talking about sharing Christ with a Christ-like heart. It's something that I've heard about many times, evangelism. I've always heard of the importance of sharing Christ with strangers and inviting my friends to church to hear the Gospel. But what about being completely unashamed? I've always gone about my Christian walking telling myself that I would share Christ if the opportunity arises. For the most part, I have. But is that enough? No. It's not enough. In fact, I've just realized that it's a cop-out... A lie. Romans 1:16 tells us to be unashamed of the Gospel. We should walk about life with no worries of rejection or persecution which the bible promises us we will face. The reason I haven't gone out of my way to share Christ in the past is because of my pride. My pride has kept me from the joy of shamelessly sharing the truth of Christ.

It's time for a change.

At The Table

Last night we kicked off all of the many youth programs we have at Sugarloaf. I have been fortunate enough to lead the 9th and 10th grade group. Despite my worries and nerves, the program went very well. It's funny how that works. People get nervous. I understand that, but I get worried about stuff. And I'm always wrong. I guess I can call it nerves if I want to. Or I can call it what it really is. Distrust, lack of faith in God... I'm glad that I'm always wrong though. It builds the faith. It shows me that God is God and this is His plan and I'm just a part of it because he has chosen me to be. That's life, not just youth ministry.

I can't wait to get back into the apartments next Tuesday. God had me elsewhere this summer but I missed it none the less.

On a totally different note, I feel like God has something big planned. It's like something is about to happen that's going to change my life tremendously and I have no idea what it could be. I walked around for about 30 minutes just praying for the students and for the work that God would do there. I truly felt a burden on my heart for the school and sensed that God was going to do something great. Yesterday, nearly a year later, I did the same thing. Why? Because God does this crazy thing where He works out His plans His way in His timing. What a sobering truth! I began a church partnership today at Newsong Community Church which just happens to be directly across the street from Central High School. We are going to be starting campus ministries at Central High and Otwell Middle. God has opened the door... He's opened it wide! And He did it on His own for His glory cause He's God and I am not. So, if you are reading this, please pray for the schools. I spent this past week reminiscing about the amazing works that God has done throughout the summer. I have seen God transform the lives of countless people... One of them being me. I was thinking today about what God has taught me through all of this. What is the most valuable lesson I have learned? The answer is worship. It sounds funny even to me. I'm a "Worship Leader". I'm supposed to know all of that stuff already right? Over the past two or three years God has really shown me what it is like to be what I like to call a Romans 12:1 worshiper... One who offers himself to God as a living sacrifice. This summer God has reinforced and even revealed more about that important truth.

This past week I met a group leader from upstate New York. He is the Director of Religious Activities at Ft. Drum army base. His youth group is a little different than most in that the students come from several different denominations grounded in basic biblical doctrine. The churches meet at the worship center at different times and different days of the week. James' heart for the students of these congregations is to unite them as Christ followers while keeping them grounded in biblical truth. His heart is also that of a true worshiper. So when he gave me advice before we left today I listened carefully. "You need to stretch yourself, Kevin." I was sort of taken off guard. "You have a great heart for Christ and great talent but you need to stretch yourself. This is something that God has put on my heart to tell you. And when God puts something on my heart to tell someone, I tell them." I thought about his suggestion for a minute and suddenly it clicked. He wasn't giving me this advice to help me become a great musician or anything like that. He was telling me to stretch myself musically because he has a heart, not only to worship God, but to see other people from all different cultures and walks of life worship God also. It made me ask myself the question, "Do you want that, Kevin. Do you long for others to offer themselves as living sacrifices to God." Sometimes... But not enough. In Romans 9 we read of Paul's sorrow for those who don't experience God the way he does. (v3) "For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers and sisters, my kinsmen according to the flesh." Here, Paul is speaking specifically of the chosen nation of Israel. But the biblical truth that we should long for others to know Him the way we know Him is still apparent.

As Christ Followers are we devoted to seeing others serve, know and worship our great God so that His name may be glorified?

Grace, Grace, God's Grace...

I have recently been challenged to question the way I view grace. I have been reading "The Purifying Power of Living by Faith in Future Grace" by John Piper. I realized that all too often I view the Christian life, it's qualities, and works as something done out of payment to God. Now, I know this view is skewed and far from the truth but it's just something that I subconsciously do. Maybe it's the "debtors ethic" view of American culture. You do something good for me... Now I owe you one. That sounds nice and easy but that's just not how God works. Grace is not something given with the expectation of being paid back. It is given by God with the expectation of faith in more grace! Gratitude is very important in Christian living. I don't doubt that. But it should not replace faith as our motivation for a Christ centered, God honoring life.

The illustration Piper uses is that of a house given as a completely free gift. The house represents salvation. God gives us this house, right? It's the best house there is. It protects you and has everything thing you would ever need to survive. Your food, your drink, everything. God asks that we shelter no other gods in this house. He asks us not to put others before Him. Say we take the house then immediately call up a lawyer and set up monthly mortgage payments. The house is no linger treated as a gift. It's now treated as something purchased. And we all know that grace can never be purchased.

I highly recommend that you buy this book, meditate on the insight it offers and most importantly, search for the scriptural basis.

"Grace to You"

The Silent Boriken

I'm back in the states! How sobering it was, especially in the midst of this crazy summer!

"The Lord your God is in your midst, a Mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing." We arrived safely to Aguadilla yesterday around noon. Our second and final project in Juana Diaz was great. The week didn't seem to promising at first. A lot of little things were going wrong so I began to feel discouraged. That changed quickly. There were seventy Kids each day at one of the VBSs we had around the city. The construction crews accomplished way more than what was expected. On Friday evening a student was baptized in the Caribbean. All for the Glory of God. Non for or by me. How humbling...

Lauren is coming to Florida to visit me! I can't wait. The distance and lack of communication has been difficult but rewarding. God has really shown me how important she is and how much I really love her! Enough gushiness... The participants left in the morning and a new group came in in the afternoon. It was an awesome week. The Spirit moved as He tends to do. The Father was obviously working in the lives of so many of the students. The group shared their faith around 135 times (there were around 115 participants) We are about to leave to go to El Mesias which is a local church in Juana Diaz. HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL!

On our off day (Wednesday) we went to La Parguera. We went snorkeling in the afternoon. In the evening we went to the glowing bay (there's a name for it in espanol. But anyways, there's somethig crazy in the water that makes this bay glow. It's actually the alge. It was beautiful! To see all that God has created is always worshipful.

One last thing...

If you guys could pray for Michael. I met him while he was playing his guitar in front of walmart in Ponce. We began talking about faith and it was apparent that he has a very misconstrued view on works, deeds, and materialistic wealth among other things. I prayed for him and we both agreed that the time we spent together was a divine appointment. Pray.

To God Be the Glory
Kevin

The Happy Hotel

I'm sitting in my hotel room with the other kevin. He's the audio/visual guy. I call him "the bull." Starting tomorrow I will begin calling him "El Toro." Yeah, that's right... We are FINALLY leaving for Puerto Rico tomorrow! Last night we had a "Mock Set-up" in roswell GA. We set everything up so our national staff can see that we know what we're doing.

Before we left for training yesterday one of the national staff members read a verse that has been on my heart for the past two days. "Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." -2 Corinthians 3:4-6
Think about that. That's me. That's you. The letter refers to the Old Covenant or The Law. Without Christ the letter kills because we all fall short. But now we have this confidence in the truth that Christ has saved us and commissioned us to do awesome works. That confidence was all but gone last week. I was scared, nervous, anxious, and i missed (still do) my FIANCEE!.... I had such a lack of trust.

If your counting on yourself than worry away. You should be anxious, nervious, or scared. But our sufficiency is from God! Praise Him!

No worries, Bro.

Continue to pray. Our team is doing three projects in a row in PR. We have no days off for the next three weeks.

P.S.- Be sure to check out www.igracemusic.com
listen to "come ye disconsolate" from the "Beams of Heaven" album.

Training at Truett

This past week I have been spending my time in prep for the world changers projects this summer. To be honest, It has been difficult. We are held to a high standard as music leaders. There are alot of things that can and Will go wrong this summer. I am being constantly reminded that my discomfort is out of selfishness. This is God's story, His work, His project.... I am just fortunate enough to be apart of it. 1 Peter 2:9. We're a chosen race. I did nothing to deserve this. Pray for ALL of the projects this summer. Pray that we always remember the purpose of our work... I'm excited about what God is going to do this summer so I can't be too sad. But man, I'm going to miss the kids at Brighton Springs. Especially the ones that have been coming to the youth service at Harbins Ridge. Pray for Larry, Angelica, and Mario. I brought them to an evangelism event on Saturday. They had a great time and we had an interesting discussion on the way home. Pray for strength and wisdom for me as we hopefully go depper into this discussion today. We are going to be discussing Jeremiah 29:11. It's so amazing to think of the awesome plan that God has for our lives!

God really blessed me through everyone at Sugarloaf on Sunday night. Everyone pitched in for a new guitar case (Much Needed!). I got it today! I wanted to have this thing to share with people just how awesome God has been through the ministry He has so graciously called me to. I hope and pray that this will encourage others to pray for me in this ministry. I am always in much need of prayer. Next Sunday I will be leaving for 10 weeks with the NAMB to lead worship in Puerto Rico/ Florida. Keep us in your prayers! I will miss everyone. especially my loveley fiance, Lauren. Also, pray for the ministries that I will be taking a break from because of my trip. Sugarloaf Community Church youth ministry, brighton springs apartments, Harbins Ridge Youth Ministry, the bridge church of atlanta middle school ministry... I will miss them dearly.
So pray, pray, and pray. pray without ceasing! (1 Thes. 5:17)

To God alone be the glory
Kevin

P.S.
